New SIM Card Rule: New rules and regulations for mobile SIM cards have been issued. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued these new rules on March 15, 2024, and they will take effect nationwide from July 1, 2024. New SIM Card Rule: What Changed In The Rules?
The new rules state that mobile users who recently replaced their SIM cards will not be able to transfer their mobile numbers. This process is known as SIM swapping, which occurs when a SIM card is lost or damaged. If this happens, users must request their telecom operator to replace the old SIM with a new one.
What are the benefits?
TRAI asserts that this measure is intended to thwart fraudulent activities. The rule aims to prevent fraudsters from immediately swapping SIM cards or transferring mobile connections after replacement.
What is SIM swapping?
In today’s environment, SIM-swapping frauds have become more prevalent. Fraudsters easily obtain their PAN card and Aadhar photo, then request a new SIM card under the guise of a lost mobile device. Subsequently, the OTPs intended for you are redirected to the fraudsters.
New SIM Card Rule: TRAI’s recommendation
TRAI has suggested to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to introduce a new service that displays the name of every incoming call on the mobile user’s handset, regardless of whether the name is saved in their contact list. This measure aims to reduce fraud incidents, although concerns about privacy have been raised.
