WhatsApp to Stop Supporting These Android Smartphones Starting January 1, 2025

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced that the app will no longer support certain Android and iOS devices starting in 2025. This decision comes as part of WhatsApp’s regular updates to enhance security and optimize the app for modern devices.

From January 1, 2025, smartphones running Android KitKat or older will lose access to the app. Similarly, from May 5, 2025, iPhones with iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will no longer be compatible. Users of these devices are advised to upgrade their operating systems or switch to newer hardware to continue using WhatsApp.

Affected Android Devices

Android KitKat, released in 2013, is no longer widely supported as most smartphones have moved to newer Android versions. WhatsApp’s discontinuation of support reflects the limitations of older operating systems in handling modern security features and updates.

Here’s a list of affected Android models:

Samsung

  • Galaxy S3
  • Galaxy Note 2
  • Galaxy Ace 3
  • Galaxy S4 Mini

Motorola

  • Moto G (1st Gen)
  • Razr HD
  • Moto E 2014

HTC

  • One X
  • One X+
  • Desire 500
  • Desire 601

LG

  • Optimus G
  • Nexus 4
  • G2 Mini
  • L90

Sony

  • Xperia Z
  • Xperia SP
  • Xperia T
  • Xperia V

Affected iOS Devices

Starting May 2025, WhatsApp will also phase out support for devices running older iOS versions. Users of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus—limited to iOS 12.5.7—will be impacted. Upgrading to iOS 15.1 or newer is essential for uninterrupted service.

This change applies to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, ensuring consistency across platforms.

Why the Change?

Meta routinely updates WhatsApp’s minimum system requirements to ensure compatibility with evolving technology. Older operating systems often lack the capabilities needed for modern app features, posing potential security risks.

Similar updates have been implemented in the past, targeting earlier versions of both Android and iOS. These efforts aim to provide a secure and feature-rich experience for users on supported devices.

What Users Can Do

  • Android Users: Upgrade to a device running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or above.
  • iOS Users: Update to iOS 15.1 or newer.

For users unable to upgrade their hardware, exploring alternative devices will be essential to continue using WhatsApp services.
